The 1998 Great American Pastime League Season
After a very
successful 115-47 season winning the division by 8 games, and getting a first
round bye, the Stormtroopers imploded in the playoffs. South Bosque lost 4
games to 1 to the Chatham All-Stars.
The 1999 Great American Pastime League Season
The
Stormtroopers
played well over their heads on disk 1 and disk 2, but were still 8 games
out of
the playoffs. The management decided not to make a run for the pennant, and
the
result was a disasterous disk 3, and an even worse disk 4, as the team
ended the season 72-90.
The 2000 Great American Pastime League Season
The
Stormtroopers
won the Patriot division for the second time in three years, edging the
Wolfforth Big Dogs by four games. The Stormtroopers won 112 games, the second
most in franchise history. South Bosque swept the Chatham All-Stars in the
first
round of the playoffs. Unfortunately, we lost a close 7 game series against the
Predators to once again fall short of the finals.
The 2001 Great American Pastime League Season
The 2001 season
began with expanding GAPL to 26 teams, and a switch for the Stormtroopers from
the Patriot Division. The pre-season also saw the arrival of Derek Jeter.
The season went well, as the Stormtroopers won 103 games and
their third division title
in four years. As in 2000, the Stormtroopers won the first round of the
playoffs, this time against last year's nemesis, the Predators. However, in
a thrilling 7-game series, the Southern California Express defeated the
Stormtroopers in the Conference finals. The 7th game was a 1-0 victory for
the eventual GAPL champions.
The 2002 Great American Pastime League Season
Finding no takers for 37-year-old Barry Bonds and his 73 home runs, the
Stormtroopers have decieded to push one more time for a championship, trying
to ride Bonds' bat and a deep, but only average pitching staff. Facing a weak
roster, two major trades moved Bobby Abreu and Derek Jeter in an attempt to
gain enough depth to win again. Once again, the Stormtroopers made the
playoffs by winning 104 games. Once again, the Stormtroopers won the
first round of the playoffs, only to fall in the semi-finals 4 games
to 1 to the Detroit Devil Rays.
The 2003 Great American Pastime League Season
The season starts early with the great sell-off. Only three players
remained on the team from last year, youngsters
Adrian Beltre, Johan Santana and Craig Wilson. The rookie draft yielded
a good crop of prospects, so we now have a three year rebuilding plan.
We hope to contend (although perhaps not win the division) in 2006.
We certainly didn't contend in 2003, ending up with the worst record
in GAPL, but the overall #1 picks in both the Rookie and regular draft.
The 2004 Great American Pastime League Season
We will be better, and probably not the worst team in the league, but
there is a lot of work to do before we can compete. The Stormtroopers
did have some improvement, going 50-112. However, the rebuilding should
be complete after the 2005 draft.
The 2005 Great American Pastime League Season
The rebuilt infield of Blalock,
Greene, Giles and Teixeira is expected to lead the offense and Johan
Santana is expected to lead the defense. Teixeira was traded
for Ben Sheets, and we won the division with pitching. In fact,
the Stormtroopers
won the most games in GAPL with 109. The first round of the playoffs
saw our old nemesis, the Southern California Express. In a series
similar to the 1961 World Series, the Stormtrooper won 3 1-run games
to take the series 4 games to 3. However, the Arizona Intimidators
totally stopped our hitting, as we lost again in the conference finals.
As a surprise bonus,
an early season trade landed the Stormtroopers with what turned
out to be the first pick
in the Rookie draft. Seattle phenom Felix Hernandez is rumored
to be shopping for housing in the South Bosque area.
The 2006 Great American Pastime League Season
The pitching staff, once again led by Johan Santana, looks to be very
strong, as we have five solid starters with Sheets, Bonderman, Capuano
and Westbrook filling out the rotation. What we lack, is offense.
The hot stove league is piping hot with the rumor that another pitcher,
Felix Hernandez, will be taken with the first pick in the Rookie
draft, instead of a hitter to help the struggling offense. A big
trade landed Miguel Tejada to place in the middle of the lineup. The
Stormtroopers won the division by 15 games, with a 99-63 record.
We defeated the Detroit Devil Rays, 4 games to 3 in the first
round of the playoffs, before once again losing in the second round.
This time, we were swept by the California Condors.
The 2007 Great American Pastime League Season
The offense has been almost totally replaced with a new OF of Barry Bonds
and Jim Edmonds (aquired in a trade with the Express) and an infield
of Scott Rolen (League), Jason Bartlett (backup last year), Marcus Giles
and Prince Fielder (Devil Rays). David
Ross (Red Shirts) and Brian Schnieder will platoon behind the plate. The rotation
is deep, if slightly injury prone. Johan Santana is still the ace,
with Ben Sheets, Pedro Martinez, Jeremy Bonderman, Felix Hernandez, and
Jake Westbrook. For the first time in a long time, we have a deep bullpen
anchored by B.J. Ryan and Trevor Hoffman. We also have the 4th pick in the
1st round of the draft, and will probably take an OF. The regular season
was incredible, as we won 112 games, tied for the 2nd most in team
history (2000), and won the division by are ridiculous 43 games.
The playoffs continued to disappoint, as for the first time
in franchise history, we lost in the first round, 4 games to 2
against the Express.
The 2008 Great American Pastime League Season
The last player from the 2002 sell-off, Johan Santana, is dealt
in the off-season for B.J. Upton and Dustin Pedroia. The fourth straight
division title was small consolation for another poor post-season performance.
Although round 1 was a success, once again the Stormtroopers lost in the
second round, 4 games to 1 against the Devil Rays.
The 2009 Great American Pastime League Season
The mid-season trade of Pedroia is looking like a bad move, as one of the
quietest off-season in team history went by. The team has a solid pitching
staff, but the offense is only above average. Re-alignment has brought a
strong team into the division, and former nemesis Tom Munn now controls
that team. The season is going to be much tougher, and a 5-peat is not
certain. However, the aquisition of Jermaine Dye right before the season
paid off, and we won the 5th straight title. A rematch with the Devil
Rays in the first round resulted in an exciting 7 game series win,
but our old nemesis the Southern California Express swept us in the
second round.
The 2010 Great American Pastime League Season
We start the season with an entire starting rotation on the DL
(Sheets, Bonderman, Westbrook, Santana and Myers), but a very
potent offense (8 players in the top 65 in OPS). With an
overcrowded lineup, we traded for Hideki Kuroda and Yovanni Gallardo,
giving us a solid 1-3 (counting returning ace Felix Hernendez).
We still need many more pitchers before season starts, but the
front office is cautiously optimistic about making the playoffs for
the 10th time in 13 years.
